St. Louis Rams vs. Denver Broncos Game Preview

Rams vs. Broncos Game Preview

Well here we go again but you have to start with the fact that the St. Louis Rams are 1-16 in their last 17 road games. The Rams are coming off tough back to back losses in which they were winning in the second half. The Rams have to learn to play tough mentally for 60 minutes of football. I believe the Rams main issues are still the fact that they can not run the ball inside the red zone at all and they do not have a big play receiver to make a play when they need one. Also over the last two weeks their pass defense has been torched by Troy Smith and Matt Ryan. Smith and Ryan combined for over 600 yards passing while throwing 5 touchdown passes, no interceptions and QB ratings over 100. You have to wonder if the Rams are simply starting to wear down due to their lack of depth.

The Rams must find a way to score more than 17 points per game. Denver is 30th in points allowed, and 31st against the rush. The Broncos play a 3-4 base so everything is set up for Steven Jackson to be a huge factor in this one. The only problem with Jackson is he only has 3 touchdowns while having over 1000 total yards of offense. His yards are made meaningless if he can not get into the end zone. The Broncos who are dead last in rushing have 7 rushing touchdowns and Moreno in limited play already has twice as many total touchdowns (6) as Steven Jackson. Of the Rams starting wide receivers only Brandon Gibson is averaging over 10 yards per catch (11.0). On the flip side the top four wide receivers on the Broncos are all averaging over 10 yards per catch.

The best way to attack the St. Louis Rams is through the air where they rank 19th against the pass. Last week Rams cornerbacks Justin King, Bradley Fletcher and Ron Bartell all left in the second half with apparent cramping issues. This week with the game at Invesco Field's mile high altitude you have to worry about their conditioning fair or not. The Broncos are 4th in passing and are the first team the Rams have faced that primarily use their wide receivers. The Broncos top three receivers Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney, and Eddie Royal have combined for 150 catches for 2130 yards and 9 TDs. With Kyle Orton on pace for 4800 plus passing yards and 27 touchdowns I am very worried about the Rams secondary heading into this game.

On the ground the Broncos struggle. The Broncos are dead last in the NFL in rushing with only 75 yards per game. That plays into the strength who are 10th in the NFL against the rush. Second year running back Knowshon Moreno has looked very good over the last two weeks averaging 4.7 yards per carry, catching 10 passes and scoring two touchdowns. The Rams will need to keep Moreno from getting outside and let James Laurinaitis their leading tackler with 70 clean him up.

With a win and a Seattle loss the Rams could be in a tie for first in the NFC West after this game. However I once again can not pick the Rams to win a road game, why would I? I hope I am wrong but with three straight road games the Rams are starring at a 4-9 record if they can not change things. I think Moreno has looked great the last two weeks and will cause problems out of the backfield for the Rams. The Broncos receiving core is good and deep and they will exploit the Rams lack of secondary play. If the Rams can not get to Orton at least 5 times in this game the Broncos will put up 30+ points. The Rams should be able to move the ball but they seem to be a team that gets about 280 yards every week and 17 points no matter who they play. The Rams may play tough once again but they can not match scores with the Broncos. Even though the Broncos have lost 15 of their last 20 games I still have to pick them.

The NFC Least

With a lot on the line last week for the NFC West none of the teams came through. The NFC West was 0-4 last week while being outscored 120-50. The NFC West is becoming the laughing stock of the NFL. The NFC West is now 10 games under .500 at 15-25, and they are also 9-19 when playing outside of their division. The NFC West is the only division which all of the teams have a negative net points total. The West also has the worst road record in the NFL at 3-17. Last week the Seattle Seahawks had a chance to gain a two game lead in the division but they let up 27 points by half time and almost 500 yards of offense in their game with the New Orleans Saints. Everyone was talking about the San Francisco 49ers and their chance to pull within a game of first place. Well the 49ers were manhandled at home and shutout by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who only had 3 wins in 2009. The St. Louis Rams who could have gotten into a tie for first place played fairly well against the Atlanta Falcons for three quarters but still lost by 17 points at home. Then comes the Arizona Cardinals who are a shell of themselves without Kurt Warner. The Cardinals were quickly dispatched by the upstart Kansas City Chiefs who only had four wins in 2009. This week three of the four play on the road, luckily the 49ers play at Arizona so at least one NFC West team will find a victory. All of these teams seem soft and are without the playmakers capable of winning games for them. Also the NFL is all about playing 60 minutes of football and so far none of these teams seem to have the mental makeup to do that. We need to expect and want more from the St. Louis Rams and the NFC West. Competition makes everyone better and all of these teams are still in need of a lot of improvement.

As Vinnie Sees it - Week 12 Vince Vitale

Last week after collecting 87 points I moved into 7th place out of 36 in the Suicide Fantasy Football celebrity blogger league, and I look to keep closing in on the leaders this week. To continue to move up on the leaders I am going to need to score 90+ points per week with mainly fringe players, so matchups will be the key. At quarterback I am going to go with Kyle Orton at home against the St. Louis Rams. The Rams continue to allow about 20+ points per week and the Broncos play better at home and are capable of scoring a lot of points when they are on. The Rams are 19th against the pass and the Atlanta Falcons were able to throw at will against them last week. At running back I have to again pick on the Detroit Lions. I will roll out the law firm BenJarvus Green-Ellis who is a reach but does seem to get some goal line carries. At the other spot I am going to go with another Denver Bronco Knowshon Moreno. Moreno started off with some nice power runs against the San Diego Chargers last week but the Broncos quickly fell behind and that took Moreno out of the game. The Rams will not get a big lead on the Broncos so I look for Moreno to get at least 20 touches. Moreno has caught at least 3 passes out of the backfield over the last four games and he will cause problems for the Rams outside linebackers which will have trouble staying with him. The Wide Receiver position is getting very hard to select. This week I have Santonio Holmes who seems to be getting on the same page with Mark Sanchez now. The New York Jets do not throw a lot but they are playing the Cincinnati Bengals who just allowed 49 points to the Buffalo Bills so I am looking for Holmes to get some chances in this one. On the other side we have decided on Mike Wallace because every week we pick on the Buffalo Bills. Wallace can fly and has scored a TD in five of his last 6 games. Taking a burner sometimes is a risk because if they do not get that one deep ball for a TD sometimes they can be shutout. Wallace has been catching multiple balls per game lately and has had 100+ yards receiving in his last three games. The Buffalo Bills have no answer for Wallace so hopefully Big Ben can get the ball to him. At Tight End I will go with Kevin Boss which is not my favorite pick but just going with a hunch. The New York Giants are missing their two top wide outs so I look for Eli Manning to dump the ball off to Boss a lot, we shall see if my hunch pays off. At kicker we are going with Nick Folk based on the fact the Jets kick a couple field goals a week and they are playing the Bengals who let up plenty of points each week. Well there you have it. I am in need of another 100+ point week can I get that many from these players? Check in next week to see if my selections paid off.

Week 11 Suicide Fantasy Football Results

I am playing a great new fantasy football game called Suicide Fantasy Football. Every week you must select 1 Quarterback, 2 Running Backs, 2 Wide Receivers, 1 Tight End, 1 Kicker but you can only use each player once during the 17 week season! Scores accumulated from week 1 through 17 and the overall highest point scorer wins the league.

For the fourth week in a row I had a solid effort this time scoring 87 points and moving into 7th place in the Suicide Fantasy League celebrity blogger league. For the fourth straight week every player on my roster scored a touchdown. I am very happy that I had Drew Brees still to use as he had a monster game scoring 31 fantasy points. At running back I scored 19 from LeSean McCoy who found the end zone twice, and Steven Jackson scored 5 points as he really had nowhere to go against the Atlanta Falcons defense that bottled him up. I was hoping for a short yardage touchdown from Jackson but it did not happen. Stars are hard to find in the receiver area this late into the season however I thought I would do well with Terrell Owens and Dez Bryant. Both managed a touchdown but Bryant only had eight yards receiving which was a major disappointment. Between the two receivers I received another 18 fantasy points. At Tight End I had Jason Witten who also scored but only collected 4 fantasy points. I finally did well at kicker getting 10 points from Rob Bironas who seems to score well week in and week out. I am now within 100 points of first place so I have a shot. I need to pick up 15-20 points per week on the leaders which will be hard since I have used up most of the stars in the league. Stay tuned for my picks.

Wish me luck, and check out Suicide Fantasy Football.

Falcons vs. Rams Game Preview

The St. Louis Rams will take on the Atlanta Falcons today in what I am calling a must win for the St. Louis Rams. The Rams are 4-5 and have won four straight games at home. With their next three games on the road the Rams must beat the Atlanta Falcons to have a chance to win the NFC West.

The Atlanta Falcons come into this contest with the best record in the NFC (7-2) and three straight wins. The Falcons have been the most consistent team in the NFL and their two losses were against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles.

The Atlanta Falcons feature the big three - Matt Ryan is very safe with the ball and has a 16-5 TD to INT ratio, while also producing. The Falcons are 8th in points scored, and 12th in passing. On the ground the Falcons will feature Michael Turner who is 5th in the NFC with 733 yards rushing. Through the air the Falcons have arguably the best receiver in football in Roddy White. White has 70 catches for 934 yards and 7 TDs already

On defense the Falcons are also solid as they are 8th in points allowed. The Falcons leading tackler Curtis Loftin and leading sacker John Abraham are both inured and we will see if they play. If they are out the Rams will have a much easier time moving the ball.

On offense the Falcons will try to control the ball and clock with Michael Turner. The Falcons who are 12th in passing also have a hard time getting the ball to other wide outs. People talk about the Rams and their depth but Harry Douglas is the Falcons #2 wide-out with 16 catches on the season. The Falcons go to Tony Gonzalez and Michael Turner as receivers more than their other wide-outs. The Rams must find a way to get to Ryan and lock down on Roddy White and at least take the deep ball away.

The Rams are coming off of a terrible road loss to the San Francisco 49ers in a game they basically gave away. The Rams must use their confidence at home to win another huge game. The Rams can not afford to lose this game. The Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals should both lose today so the Rams have another chance to make a move in the NFC West. A loss here will drop the Rams to 4-6 and they play their next three games on the road where they simply do not know how to win. I do not see the Rams winning more than one road game so it is very important for them to win out at home for a shot at 8 wins.

The Rams are similar to the Falcons but just without all the talent at the moment. The Rams also will try to control the ball on the ground with Steven Jackson and use a short safe passing game to keep the Falcons off the field. The Rams who are 29th in points scored are going to need to go outside the box today and get the ball down the field to someone.

Key matchups today will be Chris Long who must hurry Matt Ryan, will be going up against a huge RT in Tyson Clabo 6'6" 330 pounds. Long must find a way around Clabo. In the secondary Ron Bartell who is without an interception but has played well in covered will need help against Roddy White. The Rams must lay some hits on White and keep him in front of them.

The Falcons are also running more and more no huddle which the Rams have not seen a lot of. The Rams like to rotate in a lot of players and they may not be able to do that today against the Falcons. Overall I believe the Falcons are just too solid and the Rams just have too much trouble putting up points. I think the Falcons will smother the Rams and control this game. Again I hope I am wrong but I believe the Rams still need some more pieces to win a game like this. The Rams must be at least a +2 in turnover margin to stay in this one.

As Vinnie Sees it - Week 11 Vince Vitale

After getting 92 points last week I moved into 8th place out of 36 in the celebrity blogger league, and I look to move further up the food chain this week. After a huge week by Jon Kitna last week he looks like a solid choice against the Detroit Lions this week. Well as Lee Corso would say not so fast my friend. While I think Kitna is a good play this week I still have Drew Brees available and he is my choice. Brees and the Saints will be coming off a bye week and playing the Seattle Seahawks. Brees has at least one TD pass in every game this season and multiple TD passes in his last 5 games. I like Brees for at least 15 fantasy points in this one. At the running back position I have used most of the big named stars but I still have a couple that will both be at home this week. I will roll out LeSean McCoy against the New York Giants, and Steven Jackson against the Atlanta Falcons. McCoy usually gets about 100 total yards and you just have to hope for a TD. Michael Vick will be under pressure from the Giants so I look for some quick swing passes to McCoy to help my totals. Steven Jackson is the bell cow of the St. Louis Rams offense. Jackson has topped 100 total yards in 6 of his 9 games played but he is still having trouble finding the end zone. I like the fact that Steven finally got some balls (8) out of the back field last week and I look for the Rams to continue to throw him the ball this week. At wide receiver I still have Terrell Owens, and Dez Bryant left to play so I am going for it. Owens has easily been the Cincinnati Bengals best player this year, and it also allows me to pick on the Buffalo Bills which I try to do weekly. My other favorite to pick on is the Detroit Lions. Jon Kitna fell in love with Dez Bryant last week so I am hoping that connection stays hot this week. Jason Witten will be my tight end. Witten should get dump off passes from Kitna, and I also believe he will have a good chance to score since the Lions have been burned by a lot of tight ends this year. Two weeks in a row I have only gotten four points from my kicker and that is just not good enough in a contest of this caliber. I am pulling out the big gun this week and going with Rob Bironas who is one of the top kickers selected each week around the fantasy universe. I really could use a 10+ point game from my kicker to get me back into this game. Check in next week to see if my selections paid off.

Scores accumulated from week 1 through 17 and the overall highest point scorer wins the league.

Another solid week as I was able to put up 92 points and move into 8th place in the celebrity blogger league. I am only 35 points out of 5th and I look to make up more ground this week. I had a huge week with Eli Manning putting up 23 points and Fred Jackson bringing in 28 more. Every member of my team for the third week in a row scored a TD. LeGarrette Blount who did not even start for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers still came through with 15 big points. At wide receiver I am having a hard time from week to week. Last week I got 11 points from Larry Fitzgerald and 6 more from Mike Williams of the Buccaneers. I should have taken Dez Bryant but who saw that coming. I still have Bryant available for this week. Tight End Mercedes Lewis chipped in with 5 points and I got my final 4 points from Jay Feely which was my biggest disappointment of the week. Week 11 will be a huge week to see if I can stay close with mostly backup players. The pickings are slim coming down the stretch, matchups will be the key. Stay tuned for my picks.

Wish me luck, and check out Suicide Fantasy Football.

Rams vs. 49ers Game Preview

Well this is it Rams fans, the game we have all been waiting for. The game today against the San Francisco 49ers is the biggest game for the St. Louis Rams since they were 4-4 midway through the 2005 NFL season. The St. Louis Rams are in first place in the NFC West and control their own destiny. Sam Bradford has only been in the NFL for 8 weeks and he is already the best quarterback in the NFC West. The confidence that Bradford shows has been absorbed by the rest of the Rams. The Rams are a confident bunch, playing well and coming off of the bye week about as healthy as they have been all season.

There is really not much to say about this game. This game is very important for both teams and I expect to watch them slug it out. The Rams would love to bury the 49ers and make them 2-7 and probably end their season. A win from the 49ers could possibly bring them within a game of first place so it is all or nothing for the 49ers this week.

I expect a very even game today. Both teams will play very solid hard hitting defense while on offense both teams will feature power running. The Rams are 29th in scoring while the 49ers are 30th so it will all come down to execution and mistakes. I give the 49ers a slight edge because Frank Gore can get bigger chunks of yardage than Steven Jackson. On defense everyone always thinks the 49ers are great and play like Mike Singletary but the truth is they are 19th in scoring defense and 16th in yards allowed while the Rams have been more solid in the top 10 in both categories.

So here is the elephant in the room. The St. Louis Rams have only won 1 of their previous 15 road games. To win on the road you have to be mentally tough. With Sam Bradford at the helm the Rams are more confident than ever but have still struggled on the road. It is very hard for a rookie quarterback to perform well on the road. The Rams will need Bradford to take care of the ball today while also making some plays.

I hope I am wrong but I am going pick the San Francisco 49ers to win this game. Until I actually see the Rams win on the road I just can not pick them. I think Frank Gore will find a way to get away at least once and I think Vernon Davis will make some key plays for the 49ers. With Troy Smith at QB I think the Rams will have a hard time getting to the QB. I look for the 49ers to control the ball and make one more play that the St. Louis Rams.

As Vinnie Sees it- Week 10 Vince Vitale

After getting 103 points last week I moved into 11th place out of 36 in the celebrity blogger league. This week I am a little worried as I look to pick on the Carolina Panthers who actually have a nice defense. At quarterback I still have Eli Manning left and I see no better week to play him than this week at home against the Dallas Cowboys. At running back I am going to take a chance with Fred Jackson at home against the Detroit Lions and LeGarrette Blount at home against the Carolina Panthers. I don't expect 100 yards rushing from either but I am hoping for a TD from each. At wide receiver I still have Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is about as healthy as he is going to get. The Cardinals play better at home and there is no reason that Fitzgerald should not have a big day against the Seattle Seahawks. On the other side I am going with Mike Williams of Tampa Bay possibly the leader for rookie of the year. Mike Williams is getting a ton of targets and I hope he can get away for one long ball against the Panthers. At tight end I will go with Marcedes Lewis at home and against the porous Houston Texans defense. I was burned by Dan Carperter last week, this week I am rolling out Jay Feeley at home against the Seahawks. The Cardinals should score 20+ points against the Seahawks and I hope for at least 3 FG attempts. Lewis should get a lot of chances as Garrard will look to dump the ball off a lot. I need a huge week to move back into the top 10. I do not know if this lineup is capable of 100 points but I think they have potential. Check in next week to see if my selections paid off.

Week 10 Suicide Fantasy Football Results

I am playing a great new fantasy football game called Suicide Fantasy Football. Scores accumulated from week 1 through 17 and the overall highest point scorer wins the league.

WOW I finally nailed it and had my 100+ point week. I scored 103 points last week and moved into 11th place out of 36 in the celebrity blogger league. I need a couple of back to back 100 point weeks to get back into the race, so this week is very important. My list of star players is getting smaller. Finding backs and receivers is just a matter of matchups now. I had a huge 27 points from Aaron Rodgers who lit up the Dallas Cowboys. Michael Turner and Darren McFadden combined for 32 more fantasy points which was more than solid. For the second week in a row all of my players scored at least one TD. Greg Jennings and Steve Smith each scored and combined for 24 points, while Jacob Tamme scored 16 fantasy points with a monster game. My worst player was again my kicker as Dan Carpenter scored only 4 points. I have an actual shot to move into the top 10 this week I need to be spot on. Stay tuned for my picks.
Wish me luck, and check out Suicide Fantasy Football.
